Law Enforcement
Law enforcement agencies are responsible for ensuring the safety of
the survivor, determining whether a crime has been committed, starting
the investigative process, identifying and apprehending suspects and
preparing a report to be forwarded to the District Attorney. Partners
include the Los Angeles Police Department and their Abused Child Unit,
the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department and law enforcement agencies
of neighboring cities: i.e. Simi Valley, Glendale, the City of San
Fernando, and Burbank.
The District Attorneys
District Attorneys Office file criminal cases with the court and
works directly with CATS nurse examiners as expert witnesses on
cases.
Department of Children and Family Services
Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), the child protection
agency in Los Angeles County refers cases of child physical and sexual
abuse to CATS, sits on the CATS Community Advisory Board, and operates
an Emergency Command Post.
The Valley Trauma Center
The Valley Trauma Center a crisis counseling agency
provides advocacy to victims, short and long term counseling, support
groups, information and referrals for other services, and prevention
education programs for victims of sexual assault. The Valley Trauma
Center Advocates are available 24-hours-per-day to meet with survivors
and families at the CATS center and provide crisis intervention and
follow-up counseling. The Valley Trauma Center is a Charter Center
for the California State University, Northridge.
