Is This Reportable?
Based on the information you have learned in this module so far, decide whether
you would report the following situations:
1. A mother is summoned to the school of her 5-year-old son. He has been misbehaving,
and she is required to take him home. As they leave the schoolyard, she whacks the boy
across the rear with her hand. You are the childs teacher and you observe
this.
2. A woman throws her boyfriend out of the house immediately after she discovers
that he has molested her four-year-old son.
3. A five-month-old child is brought to childcare by his 17-year-old mother. The
infant has some bruises on his left arm and an ear infection. Eight days ago, he
had been brought in with bruises on both of his cheeks. The mothers explanation
for the first injury was that the child had fallen off a bed. She has no explanation
for the second injury.
4. A neighbor reports to you that four children, ages six months, three years,
six years and eleven years are left alone every morning from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.
while the mother takes the father to work. The neighbor said that, although the 11
year old is a responsible child, she worries that he is not capable of caring for
himself and his younger siblings.
